Nylon Materials and Nylon Tubes Introduction

Nylon Materials and Nylon Tubes Introduction

Overview of Nylon
Nylon, also known as polyamide (PA), is one of the most commonly used general engineering plastics. Due to the diversity of PA types, varying structures, and different properties, nylon exhibits a wide range of applications. The commonly used aliphatic polyamides in the plastic industry include PA6, PA66, PA610, PA1010, PA11, PA12, PA9, PA612, and PA121.

Nylon Material Characteristics

Nylon possesses the following characteristics:
  • Moisture Absorption: Nylon is prone to moisture absorption, which affects its dimensional stability and performance.
  • Melt Viscosity: Nylon has low melt viscosity and high flowability.
  • Crystallinity: As a highly crystalline polymer, nylon requires high temperatures for molding, with high temperatures outside the melting point potentially damaging molds and screws.
  • Viscosity Sensitivity: Nylon's viscosity is highly sensitive to temperature changes.
  • Molding Shrinkage: High molding shrinkage rate, prone to forming burrs.
  • Weather Resistance: Excellent flowability at high temperatures, easy to solidify after melting, good weather resistance, wear resistance, shock resistance, anti-aging properties, strong shock absorption, and high heat distortion temperature.
  • Mechanical Strength: High tensile strength and elastic modulus, capable of withstanding exposure to chemicals, alkalis, weak acids, and oxidizers.
  • Low-Temperature Impact Resistance: Poor impact resistance at low temperatures.
  • Moisture Absorption: Good moisture absorption properties, glass fiber reinforcement, and gas barrier properties.

Comparison of Nylon PA6, PA66, and PA12 Materials

Common raw materials used for manufacturing nylon tubes include nylon 6, nylon 66, and nylon 12.
  1. Nylon-6 (PA6): Also known as polyamide-6, PA6 is a semi-transparent or opaque milky-white resin.
  2. Nylon-66 (PA66): PA66 has the highest mechanical strength and the widest application range in the PA series. Due to its high crystallinity, PA66 exhibits high rigidity and heat resistance, making it suitable for high-temperature electrical socket components, gears, bearings, spring brackets, pulleys, bolts, impellers, fan blades, high-pressure sealing gaskets, valve seats, oil pipes, storage containers, and more.
Property Nylon-6 (PA6) Nylon-66 (PA66)
Melting Point 215~225℃ 259~267℃
Impact Resistance Better Good
Solubility Resistance Better Good
Moisture Absorption Higher High
Semi-Transparency Yes No
Heat Resistance Good Better
Rigidity Good Better
Toughness Better Good
Price $ $$
As shown in the comparison chart above, PA6 has a lower melting point, a wider processing temperature range, better impact and solubility resistance, but higher moisture absorption, achieving semi-transparency with lower heat resistance. PA66, on the other hand, offers better rigidity, superior heat resistance, and a higher material cost.
  1. Nylon-12 (PA12): Also known as polyamide-12, PA12 has a melting point of 170~180℃. Its density, melting point, and water absorption rate are lower than those of PA6 and PA66. PA12's outstanding features include high decomposition temperature, low water absorption, good dimensional stability, excellent low-temperature performance, good chemical stability, flexibility, ease of molding, self-extinguishing properties, and excellent electrical insulation. It is mainly used in automotive fuel lines, instrument panels, accelerator pedals, brake hoses, electronic device soundproof components, and cable sheaths.

Nylon Tubes Introduction

Nylon tubes, also known as PA tubes, nylon hoses, nylon high-pressure tubes, nylon air hoses, nylon heat-resistant tubes, nylon pneumatic hoses, and nylon spray hoses, are commonly made from materials such as nylon 6, nylon 66, and nylon 12. Due to the properties of these materials, nylon tubes are suitable for hydraulic, vacuum, automation, fuel, steam, air, and brake lines. Their heat resistance and UV stability make them resistant to pressure rupture, making them ideal for use in environments exposed to sunlight.
