How does TPUCO control quality of TPU adhesive?

Viscosity Test

Step ONE.
Prepare a 45g TPU sample and 255g MEK.

Step TWO.
Add TPU into MEK slowly and mix it at the same time.

Step THREE.
After mixing for 4 hours, make sure MEK dissolves TPU pellets completely to form an adhesive solution.

Step FOUR.
Put the solution into a 25℃ incubator for over 12 hours.

Step FIVE.
Test solution's viscosity with a viscometer:
The operator checks a proper rotor is used for the right viscosity range first.
When placing the rotor in the middle of the solution container, place the rotor at a fixed height within the rotor scale.
Let the rotor spins for 60 seconds, and then record down the test result shows on the viscometer for viscosity calculation later on.

Bonding Strength Test

Step ONE.
Prepare 30×6 cm PVC test pieces, and draw a red line 2.5cm away from both ends.

Step TWO.
Clean the test pieces with MEK and use a 60℃ oven to dry the test pieces for 60 seconds.

Step THREE.
Brush coating a layer of TPU adhesive in between the red lines, and activate the adhesive by heating in a 60℃ oven for 6 mins.

Step FOUR.
Bond the test pieces together and cut the middle part of the test piece to be two 2.5*30cm test pieces. One is tested at 6 mins after bonded for the initial bonding strength, and the other is tested after 72 hours for final bonding strength.

Step FIVE.
Test bonding strength by a tensile machine:
Hold the un-bonded part of the test pieces with machine fixtures, and then peel off 1cm first.
The machine keeps peeling the test pieces until 1 cm of the bonded part is left. Record the bonding strength results on the tensile testing software.
The test result shows how much force is needed to peel apart the bonded test pieces.

Heat Resistance Test

Step ONE.
Prepare 2.5*8cm T/C cloth test pieces.

Step TWO.
Averagely coat adhesive onto the test pieces twice, and activate it with a 60℃ oven for 6 mins.

Step THREE.
Press and stick test pieces with pressure 24 hours, and Mark 0.5cm to 2.5cm with a 0.5cm interval.

Step FOUR.
Hang test pieces with 500g weight in the oven and start to rise the temperature generally.
When heating up and the test pieces peeling off to the 0.5cm~2.5cm marked line, record the temperature.
The results show which temperature range weakens the bonding strength of the adhesive.
